Colchester CAMRA Young Members Pub Games Night at the New Inn.

Saturday 6th June, 2009

Jennings Tom Fool, Flowers IPA, Greene King Old Speckled Hen were the fuel to keep energy levels sufficient for the night ahead.

Josie kindly utilised her organisational skills by taking charge of the pool tournament, whilst I struggled in the back room to set up the Wii .... I needed to fathom out why a colour television suddenly morphed into a machine that would only display black and white distored images.

Leslie took control of the darts setting up a game that allowed everyone in the pub to join in and have a reasonable chance.

After a bit of a faff the games commenced. With shove hapenny, cards, domino's, and the Wii there is too much to report on ... therefore I have only decided to only give details for the pool tornement, and if anyone wishes to know how many fish Pete or James managed to eat with their penguin "me's", or how many times Oily managed to swing the hula hoop around his waist ... I am afraid you will be left wondering.

ROUND 1 (notes made by Josie)

Josie v Dave
1st game void, due confusion over whether or not a pocket should have been nominated for the black
2nd game saw Dave go through the next round.

JT v Pete W
JT using his own cue wowed the crowds by potting the last 3 balls in a row followed by the winning shot on the black.

SPILLAGE INTERVAL

A short break was needed following a risk assessment which lead to clearing the beer spillage on the floor. Although unscheduled, this was necessary for health and safety reasons.

Ann v Simon (ROUND OF THE PUBLICANS)
A very tactical (ie. slow match). Eventually Simon got the better of Ann.

Andy v Mark
Good start - the toss of the coin to see who would break resulted in the 20p going down the pocket, never to be seen again. Less excitingly Mark won the game.

Pete C v Georgie
The older 'young' member taught the 'younger' young member how to play.

Lucy v Nigel
Lucy using the lucky 'team tweed' cue went through to the round two.

ROUND 2

Malcolm v Meryl
Battle of the Roots - The dad won

JT v Mark
JT had the chance to win a double over the Whybrow family but couldn't manage it despite the game going down to the last black

Dave v Simon
Halstead rules made it tricky for Simon to win, but he suceeded still

Pete C v Lucy
A gallant effort from Lucy but a professional foul from a near by post did not phase Pete who went on to win the game

SEMI-FINALS

Mark v Malcolm
A close fought match but Whybrow Junior came out on top

(Josie retires as Pool co-ordinator in order to catch the last bus home, she takes with her the parents who were shocked at the interesting sights outside Bar 19 on a Saturday night whilst they waited for the number 65).

Pete C v Simon
Simon won. (Sorry for the brief description of this match ... but Pete W was going on about his swollen feet AGAIN!)

FINAL

Simon v Mark
A very tactical final. Just like in real life inconsistant refereeing played a vital role in this final game. A controversial decision to disallow playing down the table in the very late stages of the game hindered Marks chances of winning. However an even more controversial decision to only allow one shot on the black (well its Halstead rules! I didn't know that people had played differently earlier did I!) saw Mark take the title of Pool Champion! Well done that man.

Despite a lot of 'unofficial' young members, it was great to have 5 of us under 30 ... with 3 young members who have not attended any CAMRA socials before ... a special thanks to Matt who managed to sort out the Wii!

And thanks to everyone else who came and made the night so enjoyable.
